Gearing up for this year’s Fanaticon. This is the second year Asheville has had a comic convention. I didn’t have the privilege of going last year so I hope this year will be the first of many. If you’re in the area on May 21 my buddy Phil Juliano of Best in Show and I will be set up with a booth around Pack Square downtown. Hope to see you there!
Just got back from the comic con in Pittsburg (Yeah, a week ago! Don’t judge, me got tired!). This was my second year attending and I finally solidified my spot as a regular. Apparently it only takes two appearances to do that. I want to take a second to plug my buddy and fellow cartoonist Phil, who also lives in Asheville. We’ve been attending cons, breweries, and have drawn side by side for the past three years. He is also a member of the National Cartoonist Society (NCS). Check him out at http://bestinshowcomic.com/wordpress/
Thanks also to Phil for taking this pic of my booth at Pittsburg:
I recently attended a lecture at the University of Asheville to hear Gareth Hinds speak on his history as a graphic artist. He has visualized such works as Beowulf, King Lear, the Odyssey, as well as other works most English teachers would covet as learning material for their students. The majority of the South Eastern Cartoonist Society was also in attendance. Gareth demonstrated his use of Indesign, combining it with Photoshop to layout storyboards and rough drafts. Later he shared some work which inspired him including the manga Appleseed, the award winning Maus, as well as some French cartoonists I otherwise might have missed out on. I even got mentioned for Dragin in the keynote from our own James Lyle! Later we adjourned to Luella’s BBQ in Asheville and plied Gareth well into the night with more Q & A…….and hush puppies. link
Being part of the South Eastern Chapter of the National Cartoonist Society (SECNCS) has given me the chance to meet many talented professional cartoonists. The Asheville chapter of the SECNCS recently hosted the judging of the book illustration category of cartoonists for the 2010 Division Awards. Afterwards, everyone met for dinner in town and I was fortunate enough to sit and speak with Nick Meglin, one of the pioneering cartoonists for Mad Magazine. To my other side was editorial cartoonist Bill LaRocque. I took this rare opportunity in a fancy restaurant to order quail of all things. Not the easiest bird to eat, as it turns out. There were more bones than meat. It did, however, provide witty banter and a comic to boot! I think next time I’ll stick with a cheeseburger.
It took about a year but Dragin has finally relaunched. I thought a long time about what I should say here. I just want to thank the two most important people in making this site possible, Chris and Jamie. I have big plans for the future of Dragin, and with their help this is only the beginning. Dragin will update Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. For now I better grab another latte and get back to the comics. Thanks to everyone for your continued support!
